Sand lizards ( Lacerta agilis ) decrease nymphal infection prevalence for tick‐borne pathogens Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in a coastal dune ecosystem

چکیده
Understanding which factors determine tick-borne disease hazard can contribute to effective control. In Europe, the of pathogens Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. and Anaplasma phagocytophilum is determined by local tick densities (mainly Ixodes ricinus) reservoir competence host species community. Sand lizards (Lacerta agilis) are common hosts for larvae nymphs I. ricinus non-competent reservoirs both pathogens. Consequently, high relative abundance L. agilis hypothesized be associated with lower infection prevalence in nymphs. Here, we aimed test whether this effectively occurs natural settings. We sampled different habitat types within a heterogenous dune landscape at Dutch coast estimated (1) densities, (2) community competence, (3) density questing ticks (4) number feeding on agilis. Captured had burdens contributed substantially their habitat. B. A. were virtually absent from The nymphal was where more abundant. Hence, strongly reduced competence. higher denser vegetation also varied between than prevalence. As result, stronger effect infected did Synthesis applications. Coastal habitats favourable have human hazard. These results might applicable similar ecosystems present. From public health perspective, underlines importance preserving early successional habitat, as encroaching shrubs hazard, removal solution reduce coastal dunes. degree spatial heterogeneity poses opportunities manage recreational activities limit exposure diseases.

Prevalence of borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato infection among rodents and host-seeking ticks in South Carolina.
Tissues of rodents and host-seeking adult ticks collected in the Piedmont, Sandhills, Coastal Plain, and Coastal Zone of South Carolina were cultured in attempts to isolate Borrelia burgdorferi (Johnson, Schmid, Hyde, Steigerwalt & Brenner), the etiologic agent of Lyme disease. An exploratory, tree-based statistical analysis was used to identify ecological variables that were associated with sp...
متن کاملDetection of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in lizards and their ticks from Hungary.
To investigate the involvement of lizard species in the natural cycle of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) in Hungary, a total of 186 reptiles belonging to three species--126 green lizards (Lacerta viridis), 40 Balkan wall lizards (Podarcis taurica), and 20 sand lizards (Lacerta agilis)--were captured in 2007 and 2008. All ticks removed from the lizards were Ixodes ricinus, either larvae (...

Soil seed banks, habitat heterogeneity, and regeneration strategies in a Mediterranean coastal sand dune
This study investigated the effects of microhabitat characteristics on soil seed bank structure, regeneration strategies, and plant composition in a Mediterranean coastal sand dune in Israel. Three different microhabitats were selected: (a) open patches between shrubs, (b) shrub understorey, and (c) open, disturbed patches in pedestrian trails. In each microhabitat two types of sampling plots w...
